Vitor Pereira's final act as Wolverhampton Wanderers manager was a dismal one. As the visiting fans at Craven Cottage chanted for his dismissal, there were cheers for Brazilian midfielders Andre and Joao Gomes, who were left on the bench during a 3-0 defeat to Fulham. This decision was yet another that baffled supporters and symbolized the unraveling under Pereira's leadership, leaving Wolves at the bottom of the table. The problems at Molineux run deep, with the team having secured only two points from ten Premier League matches, making them favorites for relegation after eight seasons in the top flight.
This marks the fourth consecutive season that Wolverhampton ends the year with a different manager than the one who began pre-season preparations. Internal changes and unconvincing recruitment have further complicated the situation. The appointment of Domenico Teti as director of football, a figure Pereira had worked with in Saudi Arabia, was meant to bolster Pereira's control but failed to meet expectations.
Issues within the club's structure, along with poor transfers such as the acquisition of Ladislav Krejci from Girona, who has not lived up to his hefty price tag, have further exacerbated the situation. Changes in captaincy also highlight the instability within the team.
Although Pereira managed to turn the club's fortunes around last season with six consecutive wins, his inability to navigate tough times and lack of a clear strategy have led to the current crisis. His sacking may be inevitable, but the problems at Wolverhampton remain.
As a sports journalist, I believe Wolverhampton must urgently rethink their long-term strategy and stabilize their leadership to avoid relegation and regain the trust of their fans.
