Real Madrid is seeking significant compensation from UEFA after a Spanish court ruled in their favor regarding the failed European Super League project. The Spanish club announced that the Provincial Court of Madrid has dismissed the appeals from UEFA, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), and La Liga, affirming that UEFA had seriously violated EU competition laws by abusing its dominant position.
Real Madrid was among the 12 clubs that declared themselves as the founding members of the new European Super League in April 2021, with their president, Florentino Perez, as one of the main architects of the plan. UEFA and FIFA blocked the initiative, which collapsed under the pressure of protests from fans of the English "Big Six" clubs, who were also founders. In December 2023, the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) stated that the rules used by UEFA to block the competition in 2021 were contrary to European law. UEFA introduced new authorization rules in 2022, which it considers compliant with EU law.
The European Super League was rebranded as the "Unifi League" in 2024. Barcelona and Real Madrid remain the only clubs officially supporting the project, but according to Spanish media, the Catalan club plans to withdraw.
Analysis: While Real Madrid announces a legal victory against UEFA, this does not guarantee success in their future compensation claims. The case continues to create tension between the most successful club in European football history and the governing body of European football.
