Lucy Ward, a television football commentator, has told jurors that social media posts by Joey Barton made her feel threatened and frightened. The former Manchester City and Newcastle United player is facing charges related to posts on the platform X, formerly known as Twitter, which targeted Ward, her fellow commentator Eni Aluko, and journalist Jeremy Vine. Barton, 43, is on trial in Liverpool, accused of 12 counts of sending grossly offensive electronic communications with the intent to cause distress or anxiety.

In January 2024, Barton, who has 2.7 million followers on X, compared Ward and Aluko to Fred and Rose West in a comment following an FA Cup match between Crystal Palace and Everton. Ward testified that she anticipated Barton would attack her because he dislikes women commenting on men's football matches. She described feeling threatened and subjected to ongoing harassment, which she termed "bullying." Ward expressed particular concern when Barton posted an image with her and Aluko's faces superimposed on a picture of the Wests.

Ward, a former Leeds United footballer and a long-time TV commentator, explained that the comparisons to Fred and Rose West, who committed heinous crimes, left her feeling vulnerable and threatened. She added that in today's world, when someone with such a large following makes such accusations, it's impossible to avoid the negative backlash.

The trial against Barton continues, with him denying all charges.
