Sheffield Wednesday captain Barry Bannan has expressed relief following the club's entry into administration last week, marking the end of the controversial tenure of Thai businessman Dejphon Chansiri, who took over the club in 2015. According to Bannan, this represents a fresh start for the club, which has been mired in financial difficulties, including tax debts and delays in paying players and staff.
The administration has resulted in an automatic 12-point deduction, leaving Sheffield Wednesday at the bottom of the Championship, 16 points adrift of safety. Despite this setback, there is a sense of optimism among the club and its supporters, as a new owner is being sought, with four or five serious candidates reportedly interested in purchasing the club.
Bannan noted that the past few months have been particularly challenging, especially over the summer when the club was under various embargoes and training facilities were incomplete. Nevertheless, he and his teammates have demonstrated professionalism and dedication throughout.
Wednesday fans, who had boycotted matches in protest against Chansiri, returned to the stadium for the recent loss to Oxford. Bannan, who ranks eighth in the club's all-time appearance list, signed a new contract in August, reaffirming his commitment to the team.
Analysis: While Sheffield Wednesday's situation is dire, the prospect of a new beginning and potential change in ownership brings hope for the club's future. Should a stable and committed owner be found, the team could recover and strive for a better standing in the league.
