Mary Earps has revealed that she expressed her dissatisfaction to England manager Sarina Wiegman regarding the decision to reinstate Hannah Hampton to the Lionesses' squad in 2023. Earps claims that Hampton's off-field behavior often disrupted training sessions and team resources during the 2022 European Championship. Although Earps remained England's first-choice goalkeeper during the 2023 World Cup, in April 2024, Wiegman decided to give Hampton a second chance by recalling her for a Euro 2025 qualifier against Sweden. This decision sparked discontent in Earps, who, in her autobiography "All In," states that she told Wiegman she did not understand the decision and felt that poor behavior was being rewarded.
Wiegman announced that Hampton would be the number one goalkeeper for England's title defense this summer, leading to Earps' withdrawal from international football. Although Wiegman managed to persuade Earps to reconsider her decision for a while, she ultimately retired after the Champions League final in May, realizing she had not made the right choice.
Hampton played a crucial role for England, saving two penalties and helping the team secure the European Championship against Spain. In September, Earps presented Hampton with the inaugural women's Yashin Trophy for her performances with both Chelsea and the national team.
In the same autobiography, Earps publicly disclosed for the first time that she is in a same-sex relationship with her partner, Kitty. She shared that she is happy and ready to reveal this part of her personal life, which she had kept private until now. Her announcement was warmly received by LGBT+ organizations, who hailed her as an inspiring role model.
From a sporting perspective, Earps' decision to retire from international football is a loss for the team but also opens up opportunities for emerging talents. Hampton, on the other hand, has shown her ability to handle pressure and lead the team to success.
