The crisis at West Ham deepens following a 2-1 defeat to Leeds at Elland Road. After a disappointing 2-0 loss to Brentford on Monday, manager Nuno Espirito Santo called for an improved performance. However, the opening 15 minutes of the match were disastrous for the Hammers. Just three minutes in, Brenden Aaronson opened the scoring after winning two aerial duels in the penalty area. Shortly thereafter, from Leeds' first corner, Joe Rodon outmaneuvered Lucas Paqueta and scored with a header, overpowering Jean-Clair Todibo and Max Kilman. This marked the ninth goal West Ham has conceded from a corner this season, which is still in its early stages with only nine matches played.
Nuno responded swiftly, substituting the injured Ollie Scarles with Callum Wilson after 20 minutes. Despite an improved performance and a disallowed goal from Paqueta due to offside, West Ham fans booed the team at halftime. Leeds continued to create better chances in the second half, with Aaronson hitting the post on a counter-attack. Although Mateus Fernandes scored his first goal for West Ham to make it 2-1, it wasn't enough to secure a point.
The victory lifted Leeds six points clear of the relegation zone, while West Ham remains second from bottom in the standings. Should Wolverhampton win against Burnley on Saturday, the Hammers could find themselves at the foot of the Premier League table.
Analysis: West Ham's defensive frailties, particularly from set-pieces, are becoming increasingly apparent. Nuno Espirito Santo urgently needs to find a solution to prevent further losses and stabilize the team.
