Coventry City, the Championship leaders, secured their sixth consecutive victory with a 3-1 win over Watford, who finished the match with ten men. Frank Lampard's side made a blistering start, with Brandon Thomas-Asante and Jamie Allen scoring two quick goals within the first seven minutes. Tatsuhiro Sakamoto extended the lead to 3-0 in the 42nd minute, shortly before Watford's James Abankwah was sent off. Although Imran Louza pulled one back with a penalty in the second half, it proved to be merely a consolation for Javi Gracia's team.
Thomas-Asante, the Championship's top scorer, opened the scoring in the third minute, converting a cross from Sakamoto. Coventry's goalkeeper, Carl Rushworth, made several crucial saves in the first half, maintaining a clean sheet until the break. Jamie Allen, one of two changes in the starting lineup, doubled the lead with a precise shot into the far corner following a long throw from Milan van Ewijk.
Coventry, who had kept five consecutive clean sheets before their last match against Portsmouth, continued to display solid defensive play despite Watford's attempts to fight back. Sakamoto added a third goal just before halftime, and Abankwah's red card further complicated matters for the visitors.
After the break, Coventry maintained their dominance, with Thomas-Asante and Allen coming close to adding to the scoreline. Watford managed to score a penalty through Louza, but it did not alter the outcome, leaving Coventry four points clear at the top.
Analysis: Coventry showcased excellent form and confidence, appearing poised to extend their winning streak. While Watford had their opportunities, their lack of efficiency and Abankwah's red card were decisive factors in the match's outcome.
