Rangers have announced Danny Röhl as the new head coach of the club, signing him on a two-and-a-half-year contract. The 36-year-old, who previously managed Sheffield Wednesday, steps into the role vacated by Russell Martin, who was dismissed 15 days ago. Röhl initially withdrew from the race for the position as other candidates were favored, but after negotiations with Kevin Muscat fell through, he arrived in Glasgow to finalize the deal.
Röhl's career began at RB Leipzig, where he worked as an assistant to Ralph Hasenhüttl, before joining Southampton in 2018. In 2019, he became an assistant to Hansi Flick at Bayern Munich, helping the club secure the Bundesliga title. In October 2023, Röhl took on his first head coaching role, guiding Sheffield Wednesday to remain in the Championship. His debut match as Rangers' manager will be against Brann in the Europa League.
Upon his appointment, Röhl expressed that it is a tremendous privilege to lead such a globally recognized club. He acknowledged the challenges faced at the start of the season but assured that there is still much to fight for across four different competitions.
Chairman Andrew Cavenagh expressed satisfaction with Röhl's appointment, highlighting his high-level experience and suitability for the club's ambitions. Vice-chairman Paraag Marathe added that the selection process was thorough and that Röhl's tactical acumen and hunger for success align with Rangers' goals.
Though Röhl is a young coach, he has worked in some of the most demanding football environments and has the potential to achieve great success. He is expected to bring fresh energy and innovation to the club as he aims to restore pride and success to Rangers.
Analysis: Danny Röhl's appointment is a bold move for Rangers. His experience and tactical insight could inject a new dynamic into the team. Despite his youth, Röhl has the potential to establish himself as one of Europe's leading coaches.
